This publication starts with an outline of grouse range and delves into promoting aspen forest growth for ruffed grouse. Information a staged forest with aspen of different age groups is presented.
A Grouse in the Hand
A must for every hunter, this book by S. DeStefano, R. L. Ruff and S.R. Craven gives tips for examining, aging and sexing ruffed grouse. This publication is devoted to the physiology of the bird only and doesn't look at its habitat. Although brief, it covers different methods of aging and sexing, the birds physical make-up and touches on colour phases. The book also contains a card to carry in your wallet for field identification. A brief overview of the sexing and aging information only is available on this web site under About Ruffed Grouse.
A Woodcock in the Hand
Similar to the grouse booklet, this RGS publication by woodcock expert Greg F. Sepik provides tips for examining, aging and sexing American Woodcock. Again, it is devoted to the physical make-up of the bird, but goes a couple of steps further than the grouse book. Tips on determining the fitness of the birds and how the information collected can help researchers is also examined. The book also contains a card to carry in your wallet for field identification.
