  • In order for many animals to thrive in Canada's vast forests, we need a variety of age classes in the forest. Young forests provide excellent habitat for many species, including Ruffed Grouse and American Woodcock. In many areas of Canada, forest management policies have shifted towards preserving more old growth and less forest of a younger age. This shift away from a mix of age classes puts many species at risk.For many animals to thrive in Canada’s vast forest, we need a forest of multiple age classes. Young forests provided excellent habitat for many species including Ruffed Grouse and American Woodcock. In many areas of Canada, forest management policies have moved towards more old growth and less forest of a younger age. This move away from a blend of Age Classes puts many species at risk.
